The process by which a reiki master teaches his pupils the ancient Tibetan palm healing techniques of reiki is called reiki attunement. The word reiki comes from the terms rei and ki which means universal and life force energy respectively. Through reiki attunement one can access the energy of the cosmos directly into ones palms and thus transfer it into another body for the cause of healing.

Reiki attunement is actually the process of learning Reiki. You must know that this learning process is not possible in normal classroom style teaching. The process of attunement comprises of ceremonial sessions where the reiki master accesses the immeasurable positive energy of the universe, and channelizes it through his palms to the pupil. Hence, the teaching is also transferred through the palms very much in the same way as during healing.

Dr Mikao Usui popularized Reiki during the nineties and the Reiki attunement process practiced in today’s world is a blend of the Usui method and the ancient Tibetan techniques.

There are three degrees or levels to complete the process of reiki attunement. These three levels are called Shoden, Shokuden and Shinpiden. Through these levels we can learn reiki from the basics to the advanced symbols for healing purposes.

In the first level of Reiki Attunement, the fundamental theoretical concepts and the basic hand positions are taught. Reiki can be practiced in two ways, either it is a localized treatment for healing a particular part of the body that is diseased or injured, otherwise, Reiki is performed to attune all the seven Reiki chakras or energy meridians of the human body which is known as the whole body treatment.

In Shokuden or the second degree of reiki attunement, you can learn the ability to transfer the universal positive energy into your palms and then channelize it to some other person’s body who needs to be healed. At the completion of this level the reiki practitioner can heal people across both time and space.

In Shinpiden or the third and final level of reiki attunement, you will be taught the advanced reiki symbols and might be able to gain control over some. By completing this level you yourself will become a reiki master and therefore be able to take reiki attunements for others.

The Reiki Attunement ceremony is generally divided into two parts, the first part where the Reiki master stands at the back of the recipient and the second part, where he comes to his front. The attunement process involves both starting by centering and grounding themselves and thereafter the Reiki Master lifts up his left hand to access the universal energy and uses his right hand to draw reiki symbols of the recipient’s palms, third eye and crown of the head areas, intensely concentrating and meditating all the while and stroking, tapping, blowing and chanting in the process.
